Friends Of Dunwood Park

The association exists “To provide or assist in the provision of, or the improvement and upkeep of, facilities for leisure, sport, recreation and education and other activities for the inhabitants of Shaw & Crompton and others in the county of Greater Manchester without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.”

In other words we try to help to keep the park nice for all users.

The park is a unique asset for the people of this area.  It is a pathway to the moorlands, it is a heritage site. It is a place for rest, relaxation and leisure in woodland, playground, bowls and tennis courts. It harbours abundant wildlife including rabbit, squirrel, fox, owl, heron, mallard, many species of birdlife and brown trout.  It is a well used park and well loved by many who can recall their youth spent or mis-spent among its woodlands.

The park land was a gift to the people from Captain Crompton in 1910. The local council paid for the land to be laid out as a park which was opened on completion in 1911 to celebrate the coronation of George the 5th. Not all the councilors felt that it would be money well spent but to their credit, when they saw the results of their labours, they were gracious enough to express their delight in the outcome.

Sadly time has not been as kind to the park and as we approach its centenary we have to recognize that much of the park is “worn out”.  This is where we come in.

Working with the local council and its officers we have already secured some funding for essential repairs and improvements. This is only the start because our sights are now set on the Tulip Fund Day which is Parks Department speak for  a considerable injection of cash! We are working hard, mainly behind the scene, to convince the council that Dunwood Park is the right place to put their faith and their money. We hope to keep you, and them, up to date with progress through this website
